It was hard to keep a tally but we have a good guesstimate that we have handed out well over 2000 toys for kids in need this Christmas ๐ Given we were aiming for the sky with our request for 250 gifts this is absolutely phenomenal. We just canโt thank you all enough. So many families are doing it tough this Christmas with many losing jobs and income security because of Covid. Weโre thrilled to be able to help them out and bring some Christmas joy for them this year. We were able to fill the Christmas wish list for […]
A massive thank you to all our beautiful supporters, look at what you have made happen. We initially had a target of 250 Christmas gifts for children in need this year and we achieved that goal in November. Then we set a target for 500 gifts and we are well on the way to smashing that goal!!! This is absolutely phenomenal and we couldnโt have done it without you!!! Thank you to every single one of you who has donated a gift or donated financially. We had the privilege of meeting some of our gift giving angels at The Kala […]
Yesterday I met with the Australian National Skills Commission with the goal of initiating changes in the employment landscape that will see more jobs available for people with housing insecurity and those experiencing homelessness. More needs to be done to address the individual employment needs of those who need extra supports put in place, who want to and are ready to work. We must have these conversations now so we will see a future where being unhoused is not a barrier to finding accessible, purposeful and enjoyable employment. This is just the beginning but we are starting to get a […]

Today we started our annual Christmas appeal to make sure children and families doing it tough can still enjoy Christmas this year. When we first started helping families at Christmas it was just a few gifts and vouchers to those experiencing homelessness. Now we collect and send gifts all over the country. There are still so many people and places forgotten and suffering at Christmas time. This year our first goal is to help 250 families, and our second goal is to help 250 more! Weโre not a funded charity. We simply rely on the good hearts of the people […]
Everyone has a right to safe, suitable and engaging employment. But rarely do we make space for people experiencing homelessness to join the work force. Homelessness is chaotic. No two days are the same , but even amongst the chaos of navigating homelessness many people still want to work. The problem is that most workplaces do not accommodate the differing needs of people in unstable housing. They donโt take into account that for the most part this cohort wonโt be able to start and finish at regular times. They may need more time off work, they may not be able […]
We are so incredibly proud of our superstar, Leah, and wanted to share her story with you. We first met Leah when she was experiencing homelessness and staying at Launch Housing. Leah was in her early 20โs and had already been at Launch Housing for some months. We invited Leah to do our Plate Up project which she accepted, and weโre so glad she did. Leah was a standout star at Plate Up and did so incredibly well during the program. Leah soon joined us when we opened The Kala Space op shop, where she worked three days a week […]
What a day! Not only did we weed the garden, re-pot our ferns and tidy up our courtyard, we bagged up almost 100 laundry powder sachets for families in lock down, and made up 50 sets of masks for those who need some in an emergency. A huge thank you to Jo and Siobhan for helping out today. Our beautiful courtyard is looking much better. We canโt wait for spring to come and lockdown to be gone so we can enjoy our gorgeous space again ๐ฑ
